Whitburn boss believes Centenary Cup win proves club are on the right path

Whitburn boss Darren Wilson believes their Centenary Cup final triumph is proof that the club are on the right journey.

The Burnie were handed the trophy after beating Linlithgow Rose 3-2 in a West Lothian derby final at the Rose’s Prestonfield Stadium.

A Harrison Edwards double was added to by Ross Crawford before the hosts fought back through Calum Rae and Sean Heaver – who also went on to miss a penalty as the East of Scotland First Division side celebrated a famous victory.

And for Wilson, it was proof that the club are able to mix it with the top teams in the East of Scotland.

The Burnie’s rise has been a remarkable one over recent seasons with back-to-back promotions and now sitting top of the EoS First Division with a perfect record from their first six games.

Speaking to the West Lothian Courier, Wilson said: “Everyone at the club can be hugely proud of the win. We’re on a journey and for me, that just proved that we are on the right path and as a club we’re at the level where I think we are.

“But the journey isn’t over yet. There’s still more to come from this team and this club but we’ve shown that we can compete with the big teams in the region. It’s definitely a step in the right direction. Now it’s, how do we build on that?”

He added: “We knew Linlithgow are a great side and at half-time the message was very much that the game isn’t over but I think over the piece we deserved the win.”

Wilson reserved special praise for the fans, too, adding: “It was great to see the amount of fans that were at the game, especially families and young kids. There’s a real sense of pride within the community of the football club and that’s something that’s humbling and something that we really wanted to achieve when we took on
