Which cheap instant coffee does it best - Aldi, Asda or Lidl?

Loved by some, hated by others - coffee really is the marmite of the beverage world. The only problem is it can be on the expensive side.

So, what happens when we tried to find the cheapest but best option for our everyday caffeine hit?

Our sister site, the Liverpool ECHO, conducted a taste test of supermarket instant coffee to see if any stood out on price and flavour. Each reviewer was asked to taste test three cups of supermarket coffee from Aldi, Asda and Lidl. The benchmark was Nescafe Gold Blend, which costs £5.99 for a 200g jar in Tesco.

Unlike the ECHO's Jaffa Cakes taste test, the reviewers were told where each of the coffees was from. Each jar was similar in price and worked out at around 99p per 100g. Below, we have given an average rating and reviews of each coffee.

The Aldi coffee had mixed reviewers. Paul Philbin thought the coffee "had a nice aroma" but "was left disappointed that the taste matched the smell." Similarly, Emily Sleight said the coffee was "smoky in flavour, and was almost too strong to enjoy."

Olivia Williams said: "This coffee was my favourite out of the three I tried. It had a lovely coffee smell, strong taste and no odd aftertaste. I thought it was the most similar in taste to more expensive coffee brands."

Jess Molyneux added: "This was by far my favourite and if you wouldn't have told me, I wouldn't have guessed it was a supermarket brand - or even instant. With a strong taste and smell, I'd definitely recommend it and would even consider making the permanent switch to Aldi. I usually prefer my coffee more milky, but the flavour of this with only a dash of milk was just right."
