When was 9/11, how many people died and what happened

Today marks the 22nd anniversary of the September 11 attacks, otherwise known as 9/11.

The terrorist attacks are often considered one of the most severe in the United States and reverberate across the international community. The death toll reached the thousands and left a scar on American culture that can still be felt today.

Many people and institutions all over the world today will be united with the US to remember the nearly 3,000 victims that perished as a direct result of the horrific attack on the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001 in honour of those that passed.

Reports first began at 8.46am when an American Airlines plane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Centre. Initially, this was believed to be an accident.

However, at 9.03am, a second plane crashed into the South Tower, showing the first signs that this was a co-ordinated attack. At 9.27am, a third plane crashed into a wall at the Pentagon building.

The South Tower was the first to collapse from the severe fires and damage at 9.59am. It wasn't until 29 minutes later that the North Tower also collapsed.

At 10.03am the hijacked United Airlines Flight 93, from Newark to San Francisco, crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to regain control of the aircraft. The hijackers had planned to crash the plane into a government building in Washington, D.C. In total 44 people, including four hijackers, died.
