When Fatima Whitbread was on I'm A Celebrity, did she win and who else was on the show

I’m A Celebrity is returning to our screens this week, but there’s a twist to the popular ITV show. I’m A Celeb…South Africa features an all-star line-up with familiar faces returning to the show and battling it out to be crowned the first I’m A Celeb Legend.

The celebrities will face challenges which promise to be ‘even bigger and tougher’ than before in the pre-recorded series. Naturally Ant and Dec are presenting the show, swapping the Australian jungle for Kruger National Park.

Among the contestants taking part is former Olympian Fatima Whitbread. The ex-javelin thrower, 62, came third in the 2011 series of I’m A Celeb, beaten by McFly’s Dougie Poynter who won the series, and The Only Way Is Essex star Mark Wright, who came second.

Fatima is no stranger to competitions, having won bronze at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles and silver at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. She also won gold medals at the 1986 European Championships and the 1987 World Championships.

Viewers will probably remember Fatima’s iconic cockroach incident, which has gone down in I’m A Celeb history. During a trial which involved wearing a clear plastic helmet being slowly filled with various insects, a cockroach climbed up her nostril.

The show’s famous medic, Bob, was called to remove the insect. Afterwards Fatima had the bug preserved and waxed so she could keep it as a souvenir. “People still come up and chat about the cockroach,” Fatima admits.

“Every time I’m A Celebrity comes out, the cockroach incident gets aired quite a bit. Most children remember me for the cockroach and their parents remember me for throwing a javelin!”
