'What timing' - Man City fans react after Phil Foden blow for Liverpool FC clash

Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden will not be available for Saturday's Premier League game against Liverpool after undergoing surgery on acute appendicitis, the club have confirmed.

Foden pulled out of the England squad ahead of their second Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine on Sunday evening, instead visiting a London hospital for the procedure before returning to Manchester to begin his rehabilitation.

The issue caps off a forgettable international break for the 22-year-old, who was substituted on in the second half of Thursday's 3-1 win over Italy only to be taken off after just 12 minutes, following a red card for Manchester United's Luke Shaw.

City confirmed shortly after the news broke that their midfielder will not be fit for Saturday's welcoming of Liverpool to the Etihad, adding that it is 'unclear at this stage how long he will be unavailable for.'

City host Liverpool on Saturday, before travelling to Southampton the following week ahead of their Champions League quarter-final first-leg against Bayern Munich on April 11, and the news of Foden's procedure puts him in doubt for more than just one game.

The Blues star has joined Erling Haaland in pulling out of international duty through illness or injury, with the Norwegian striker withdrawing from his side's European qualifiers after feeling 'some pain in his groin'. Four more City stars remain on international duty with England as they host Ukraine at Wembley.
