What's the most you have paid for a pint? And would you pay more at 'peak times'?

Earlier this week, it was announced that a popular pub chain was to up the price of pints during peak times at hundreds of its pubs across the country as part of an effort to cover rising costs.

Stonegate, which owns the Slug & Lettuce and Yates chains, said it will begin charging customers around 20p more for a pint of beer at some of its locations during the busiest periods - such as weekends and evenings - under the system, which has already been introduced to around 800 venues.

The chain said the need to raise prices comes amid extra staffing costs and the need for more bouncers at the door as well as extra cleaning, washing glasses, and ‘complying with licensing requirements’.

We headed into the Northern Quarter to talk to people on the street to hear their reaction to the news and to see if they thought it would change where they went for a drink.

Builders Harry and Tim are sitting outside Koffee Pot waiting for their breakfast. They say they weren’t initially aware about the ‘dynamic pricing’ introduced at 800 pubs nationwide this week, but say the idea sounds like a ‘load of b*******’.

“Things are hard enough as they are with the cost of everything going up,” Harry says. “Unless they are going to put things down when it’s not busy then it sounds like a joke.

“I don’t really go to Yates or Slug and Lettuce anyway but if I knew they were going to put the price up - even if it was just by 20p - then it would annoy me. It’s not that much money but it’s the principle and it soon adds up.”
