What Peter Walton said before VAR ruled out Marcos Alonso goal amid Chelsea tie with Real Madrid

Peter Walton has sent Chelsea fans into an uproar on social media amid the Blues' highly contested Champions League quarter-final second leg bout with Real Madrid. BT Sports' infamous pundit declared that the west London side's third goal of the evening should stand, despite VAR quickly ruling the goal out.

N'Golo Kante galloped forwards as Real Madrid retreated into their own third before releasing Marcos Alonso, whose initial effort was blocked by Dani Carvajal. The ball ricocheted up into the Chelsea defenders' path before arrowing the ball into the top corner on his weaker foot beyond Thibaut Courtois.

Though the ricochet popped into Alonso's midriff, the Spaniard came into contact with the ball, to which BT Sport's infamous referee expert gave the goal the green light. But, to Chelsea fans' dismay, the goal was quickly ruled out, and a free-kick for handball was awarded to Carlo Ancelotti's side.

Speaking on BT Sport, Walton said: "The rules is if it hits the attacker's hand, whether it's accidental or not, the goal will be disallowed, I can't see any evidence for this to be overturned."

Chelsea played up to the occasion and began in the ascendency. Mason Mount fired the Blues ahead inside the opening quarter of an hour with an assertive finish beyond the reach of Courtois. Antonio Rudiger added his name to the score sheet and gave Thomas Tuchel's side a two-goal lead.

Timo Werner soon extended Chelsea's lead before Rodrygo handed Real Madrid a silver lining to level proceedings on aggregate. The Blues could be left to rue handball decisions in a close tie.
