What Man City boss Pep Guardiola told Ederson about links with Brazil manager role

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson says Pep Guardiola told him there is “no chance” he will become Brazil’s next national team boss.

The Selecao are currently without a manager after Tite vacated his head coach role following the team’s World Cup quarter-final defeat to Croatia. Under-20s coach Ramon Menezes has been named as caretaker boss until an appointment is made.

Ederson has been selected for this week’s internationals and is due to start against Morocco with Alisson not in the squad. A number of Premier League stars have been left out with Menezes saying he is keen for new players to be given opportunities.

The topic of the team’s next manager was central to Brazil’s latest press conference. Guardiola had been the subject of a potential approach from the Brazil FA about the vacancy despite recently penning a new two-year extension at the Etihad.

In January it was reported that Guardiola had rejected talks for the role and that he wanted to concentrate fully on City amid speculation that the Brazil FA would have allowed him to coach both club and country.

Ederson said he had spoken to his club boss about the possibility of becoming Brazil head coach and that Guardiola gave him a firm answer. “I talked to him, joked with him, but he said it was not a possibility because he has a contract with Manchester City and he just renewed for two more seasons,” he said.

“He told me that there was no chance at all. Of course, we are waiting to have the new coach announced as soon as possible because I am anxious as well. There are a lot of rumours whether it will be a Brazilian or foreign coach.”
