What Joao Cancelo did in Man City tunnel before Bayern Munich fixture

Joao Cancelo made a point to make a mark of respect to Manchester City ahead of loan club Bayern Munich’s Champions League clash with the Blues on Tuesday.

The full-back is on loan at the Bundesliga champions until the end of the season following his January switch. The 28-year-old did not make Thomas Tuchel’s starting XI but came on in the second half to feature against his parent club.

He was met with a wave of boos from thousands of fans inside the Etihad amid reports that his loan away was triggered by a falling out with Pep Guardiola. After struggling to find consistency under Julian Nagelsamnn, Cancelo has not started either of new boss Tuchel’s biggest Bayern games so far.

He was benched in the crucial 4-2 Bundesliga win over Dortmund earlier this month before being left out again in this week’s 3-0 loss to City. Cancelo has played 13 times for Bayern - four appearances of which have come under Tuchel - but he has only started eight times for the Bavarian club.

However, the Portugal international ensured he did not disrespect his employers upon entering the ground pre-match. Cancelo was seen making sure not to step on the Manchester City club badge that was emblazoned on the carpet of the players’ hallway.

Cancelo has played 154 times for City and could return to the Etihad this summer with Bayern not expected to trigger his £61.5m buy-out fee given his sporadic game time. His future at the Blues is uncertain with Guardiola being tipped to search for a new left-back in the upcoming window.
