What is going on with Chris Kirchner and Derby County’s takeover?

With Derby County set to be playing their football in League One next season, the continued progression of Chris Kirchner’s takeover of the club represents a reason for positivity. 

It has been a long and measured process thus far, with various ongoings and tests halting Kirchner from completing his takeover.

With numerous parties showing interest in Derby County Football Club, including former Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley, who had sold the Tyneside club to a consortium involving PCP Capital Partners, RB Sports & Media, and Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, it was eventually Kirchner who was named the preferred bidder at Pride Park. 

The American businessman has been very responsive on Twitter, keeping Derby fans in the loop through the various stages of his takeover.

One of the more recent updates regarding Kirchner’s strive to complete his Derby takeover is that the English Football League are set to give the green light to the 34-year-old, as per a report from The Sun.

The report states that this is all set to occur before Derby play their last game of this Championship season against Cardiff City on Saturday.

However, yesterday afternoon Kirchner provided further details as to what is needed to be done prior to completing everything to do with his takeover.

“All approved except for the purchase agreement and the membership agreement (for the league membership of the club that I’ll assume) which will be done Thursday with the EFL board. I’m coming over for that in person.” The 34-year-old said in response to an update request from a Derby fan on Twitter. 

He also pinpointed what the “last hurdle” is in what has been a tiring process: “(My bid is) conditional that MM (Mel Morris) no longer owns the stadium.
