What former Chelsea captain John Terry said about Sheffield United-linked Jake Clarke-Salter

Transfer target Jake Clarke-Salter had no bigger fan during his upbringing at Chelsea than John Terry. The legendary Blues captain acted as a mentor to the defender, who emerged from the club's youth set-up and made his Premier League debut at the age of 18.

The now 24-year-old has been linked with a move to Sheffield United following his release from Stamford Bridge. His 16-year association came to an end after the club announced they would be releasing him when his contract expires later this month.

He impressed during a season on loan at Coventry last season, playing on the left of a back three for Mark Robins' side. Blades boss Paul Heckingbottom is in need of defensive reinforcements and Clarke-Salter more than fits the bill.

Indeed, Terry was that impressed with what he saw when a team-mate of his that he believed he would go on to become his successor in the heart of the Chelsea defence.

Speaking after Clarke-Salter had come on as a 74th-minute sub in the 4-0 win over Aston Villa in 2016, Terry was not surprised he had made his Premier League bow at such a young age.

He said : "Jake has a great attitude. I remember watching him a couple of years ago being in control of the game and a really vocal player. He reminds me a bit of myself.

"He is doing great and I hope he goes on to take my position and get in the first team. It was great for him to make his debut."

Clarke-Salter has not forgotten the role Terry played in his football education and was quick to single him out when he was handed the captain's armband for England at under 21 level.

He said: "As a Chelsea player, John Terry is one of my idols. He is one of the captains who inspired me.

"When I was coming through the academy he would give me advice.”
