Manchester City enjoyed a routine start to their latest Premier League defence but that only tells half the story from their Friday night curtain-raiser against Burnley.

Goals from Norwegian sensation Erling Haaland (2) and Rodri did the damage as Pep Guardiola and his stars earned three points. However, goals and a late sending-off for Burnley were not the only talking points.

Kevin De Bruyne picked up an injury and Rico Lewis was struck by a lighter thrown from the stands in the first half, while Guardiola and Haaland were - bizarrely - involved in a furious row on the pitch as they made their way to the tunnel at half-time. Despite Guardiola's best efforts, the row was caught by the TV cameras.

Foden assist - at the wrong end

Second-guessing Guardiola and his City team selection is never a good idea. However, by his standards, this was a relatively guessable starting XI aside from those he was missing through injury.

It might have been a surprise to see Phil Foden get the nod ahead of Jack Grealish. Foden's first real involvement almost came at the wrong end as he inadvertently stumbled when attempting to make a clearance and the ball sailed through to a Burnley attacker. Luckily for him, his teammates recovered the situation.

De Bruyne gave City an early-season concern when hobbling off after 22 minutes and you would have forgiven any supporter for choosing to cover their eyes at that stage. However, had they done that, they would have missed out on what, quite frankly, was a bonkers start to the campaign.
