Wexford referee assault case to be heard in Circuit Court

The GAA mentor accused of assaulting a referee following a junior football match in Wexford last September will have his case heard in the Circuit Court.

Glen McManus (34) of Cluain Dara, Clonard, Wexford, appeared before Wexford District Court on Monday, charged with assault causing harm.

On the sideline for his club St Joseph's at their grounds at Whiterock Hill for a game against Our Lady's Island on 25 September, McManus is accused of punching referee Michael Lanigan in the immediate aftermath of the match.

McManus is also accused of assaulting a second man at the same location on the same date.

Appearing before Judge Gráinne Malone, McManus did not indicate a plea.

Judge Malone, upon hearing the details of the case, deemed it "too serious" to be heard in the District Court and directed it be heard in the Circuit Court.
