Wexford part ways with Darragh Egan

The Wexford hurlers are on the lookout for a new manager after the announcement that Darragh Egan's stint in charge has come to an end.

The Tipperary native was appointed in 2021 to succeed Davy Fitzgerald and the first campaign in charge saw some impressive groundwork laid.

There were five wins from five in the group stages of the league, followed by a draw with Galway and victory over Kilkenny in the round-robin of Leinster, before a creditable display in defeat to Clare at the All-Ireland quarter-final stage.

However, this year was a constant struggle. The Yellowbellies escaped relegation to the Joe McDonagh Cup by the skin of their teeth, with the shock defeat to Westmeath in the Leinster Championship a low point as they finished fourth in the group stages, completing their campaign with a spirited win over a Kilkenny side already assured of a place in the provincial final.

It proved to be Egan's final game in charge as today the county board confirmed his departure.

"Wexford GAA wish to announce that, following the completion of a comprehensive review of the 2023 season, it has been decided not to extend Darragh Egan’s initial two-year term as senior hurling manager," a statement read.

"Wexford GAA wish to acknowledge and thank Darragh for the enormous efforts he and his backroom team have made since his appointment in September 2021 and wish them all well for the future.

"The process to appoint a new senior hurling manager will now commence."
