Proteas back to winning ways with Trinidad and Tobago thrashing

The Proteas bounced back with a comfortable win against Trinidad and Tobago in their Pool G encounter at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) on Monday.

In a relatively empty CTICC, the Proteas got their second stage off without much of a hitch as they clinched a 69-28 win.

It was an exciting first quarter as Ine-Marí Venter got the Proteas off to a flyer with 13 shots out of 15 attempts, as South Africa won the quarter 18-12.

In the second quarter, the Proteas dominated as they easily found goal-shooters Nichole Taljaard and a struggling Venter, who lost her shooting range. The home side took the quarter 15-3.

With the Proteas in a comfortable 18-point lead, changes were made by Norma Plummer as Elmere van der Berg came in for Venter and Taljaard moved from goal attack to goal shooter.

This paid off once against the two combined well with Khanyisa Chawane at wing attack as the Proteas extended their lead by winning the third quarter 18-6.

In the final quarter, more changes were made with Taljaard and Van der Berg swapping to free Taljaard, who ended on 80 percent accuracy with 24 goals in 30 attempts.

South Africa were excellent in the middle as the combination of Bongi Msomi (16), Khanyisa Chawane (12) and Izette Griesel (11) all contributed with goal assists.

Owethu Ngubane made her first World Cup appearance as she replaced Taljaard at goal attack with seven minutes left. Ngubane was called up after Lenize Potgieter withdrew from the team due to injury.

In the final quarter, South Africa's again dominated as they took the quarter 18-7 to end with a commanding 69-28 win.

South Africa's next Pool G encounter will be against New Zealand on Wednesday at 16:00.
