Westree boxer Daisy May Constable crowned National Schools champion

Westree boxer Daisy May Constable has won the National Schools under-48kg title.

The skilful 14-year-old beat Lillia Hume (Washington ABC, Sunderland) in the semi-finals at Banbury.

She had to work hard and dig deep at times but her lovely straight jab and backhand earned a unanimous decision.

Victory set up a final against Marion Zubrzycki (Seacroft, Leeds) the following day.

The Yorkshire girl tried to push Constable back with constant pressure but that suited the Westree teenager’s classy style.

Constable landed the cleaner shots as Zubrzycki moved into range before adjusting her feet to catch the judges’ eye with quality backhands for another unanimous decision.

Mason Payne, 17, beat Diam Cleggett (Golden Ring, Southampton) for the third time in a year to win the Southern Counties youth under-67kg title.

Cleggett was desperate to beat him but Payne still had the edge, thanks to a bit of ringcraft and punch selection.

The Maidstone boy put in a shift in the final round to make sure of victory in Payne’s home town, winning the belt on a split decision.

Jimmy Dean Wood, 17, was at his best to beat Todd Anderson (West Kingsdown) to win the under-71kg title at the same venue.

Anderson had stopped his last five opponents but the class of Wood - already a national under-71kg champion - told, with terrific head movement in defence and punches coming from all angles in attack.

The referee stepped in after Wood landed a powerful left-screw shot from his southpaw stance.

Deano Manser, 12, won the Southern Counties schoolboy championship, beating Danny Jones (Palmarsh) on a unanimous decision.

He bowed out in the national quarter-finals, in only his fourth bout, losing to eventual champion Moken Mills (Crewkerne, Bristol).
