West Lothian boxer guarantees Commonwealth Games medal after quarter-final victory over reigning champion

Fauldhouse boxer Reese Lynch has guaranteed himself a Commonwealth Games medal after defeating reigning champion Jonas Junias Jonas of Namibia in this afternoon’s quarter-final.

The 21-year-old, who last year became the first Scot to bag a medal at the World Championships, was in control of the full contest - earning a unanimous 30-26 from all five judges.

Clinching his place in the semi-final guarantees him at least a bronze medal but he will be eyeing a place in the final when he takes on Canada’s Wyatt Sandford in Saturday’s bout.

Jonas, who was also the silver medallist in 2014 when losing to Scotland’s Josh Taylor, was blown away by Lynch from the off as the youngster controlled the fight.

Lynch consistently landed his punches while his opponent became flustered after a string of wild misses and was deducted a point after clearly hitting after the bell had sounded the end of round two.

The Southpaw ensured there was no drama with a controlled display in round three to bag himself a medal.

He becomes the second West Lothian athlete to medal in Birmingham after Uphall gymnast Shannon Archer became Scotland's first-ever medallist in a women's individual artistic gymnastics event at a Games when he won bronze in the vault.
