West Indies Deandra Dottin takes stunning ‘catch of the year’ at Cricket World Cup
West Indies all-rounder Deandra Dottin took a stunning catch to dismiss England batter Lauren Winfield-Hill as her side beat the defending champions by seven runs at the ICC Women’s World Cup.
Having lost their opening match against Australia, England needed a win to get their campaign back on track. However, it was a tale of dropped catches for Heather Knight’s side, who shelled six chances in total.
The West Indies batted first and posted 225-6 from their 50 overs, with Shemaine Campbelle top-scoring with an unbeaten 66.
In response, England’s chase started well as Tammy Beaumont and Winfield-Hill both reached double figures.
But at 31-0, Dottin produced her moment of brilliance. Winfield-Hill attempted to cut a short and wide ball from Shamilia Connell, but Dottin, standing at point, sprung to her left and took a one-handed catch in mid-air to leave the England batter stunned.
Knight’s side subsequently slumped to 94-5 and then 218 all-out as they succumbed to their second straight defeat.
Understandably, Dottin’s grab sparked a huge reaction online, with many branding the catch as one of the best of the year.
BBC cricket journalist Henry Moeran tweeted: “Deandra Dottin has just taken the best catch you’ll see this World Cup (and probably this year.)”
Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer echoed these thoughts and wrote: “Congratulations West Indies women on an incredible win. Not for nothing, they say catches win matches. This catch from Deandra Dottin will take some beating.”
Ex-Australian cricket star Mel Jones also agreed with this statement. Referring to Dottin’s catch, she said: “Going to take some beating this [at the] @cricketworldcup! Deandra Dottin had the cape on and used it to its fullest. #CWC22
