West Ham’s promise to Celtic star that sees him turn back on Champions League football
West Ham have reportedly made a bold promise to Celtic star Daniel Cummings in a bid to persuade him to ditch Champions League football for a crack at the Premier League.
Cummings has long been the exciting emerging talent within the Hoops academy but has struggled to force his way into the first team, much to the frustration of fans who fear another homegrown talent is about to slip through the cracks. The 18-year-old has featured just once for Brendan Rodgers, off the bench against Aston Villa, with the boss' reluctance to unleash him partially fuelled by a standoff over a new contract.
It's long been understood Cummings is close to a move south to West Ham but fresh hopes of a Parkhead stay sprouted when that deal was unable to be forced through before the transfer deadline. They could still sign him on a pre-contract agreement however which would see him leave in the summer for training compensation.
That's what they are hoping for, it seems. And according to Hammers News, they're doing everything they can to make it happen.
It's claimed Irons boss Graham Potter and his sporting director Mark Noble see Cummings as a serious talent and have promised him a role in their first-team next season should he make the move to south London – effectively swapping a crack at the Champions League for a run at the Premier League.
That seems a bold promise to make but there's a berth there waiting to be claimed. Niclas Fullkrug's injury forced them to sign Evan Ferguson on loan on deadline day and there is no option to buy in the Irishman's contract.
