West Ham fearful of last-ditch Newcastle bid for target Nayef Aguerd

Newcastle United have launched a last-gasp bid to lure defender Nayef Aguerd from the clutches of West Ham United, according to a report.

Rennes Centre-back Aguerd is set to undergo a medical at West Ham as David Moyes looks to bolster his defensive options ahead of next season.

According to the London Evening Standard the Moroccan international has travelled to London and his transfer to the Hammers could be finalised by the end of the week.

West Ham are prepared to pay an initial fee of £20 million, with add-ons which could see the deal rise to around the £30m mark.

But Newcastle have reportedly entered the fray for the Moroccan and a late approach from the Magpies could deter the Rennes man from making a move to the London Stadium.

Should Newcastle pip the Hammers to the 26-year-old then it would serve as a big blow to David Moyes' summer plans as he had been on the lookout for a left-footed centre-back for some time.

Moyes and his team have also spent time and resources scouting the player and negotiating terms with the Breton club.

Meanwhile, it could signal a double blow for West Ham if Newcastle seal the signing of goalkeeper Alphonse Areola from Paris Saint-Germain.

Areola spent the 2021/22 season on loan at West Ham, going on to feature 18 times
