West Ham confirm second summer signing as David Moyes lands goalkeeper Alphonse Areola from PSG

West Ham have completed their second signing of the summer transfer window by securing goalkeeper Alphonse Areola from PSG on a five-year deal with an option of a further year.

The French shot-stopper spent last season on loan at the London Stadium where he was primarily used as a cup keeper, keeping five clean sheets in ten Europa League matches as West Ham reached the semi-finals. The Hammers expressed an early interest in activating a buy option clause in Areola’s contract which they have now confirmed, paying a reported £11million fee.

A French international who was part of his country’s World Cup-winning squad in 2018, Areola is the West Ham’s second signing of the summer following the £30million arrival of Moroccan defender Nayef Aguerd last week.

Areola was used primarily as a cup keeper by David Moyes last season where he kept five clean sheets in ten UEFA Europa League matches as West Ham reached the semi-finals before bowing out to eventual winners Eintracht Frankfurt. He only managed one Premier League appearance as Lukasz Fabianski kept the number one shirt, though his permanent arrival would suggest he is being primed to take over from the Pole.

“I feel good, I feel great, I’m happy to sign and happy to stay here permanently and I can’t wait to start to train and to do the job,” said Areola. "The main thing is that I felt the love of the supporters last season. Something for me that is really important is to feel that I’m loved. I know that I have to do my job and to do everything to make them happy, and obviously also the team, my teammates, the staff and Xavi Valero as well.
