West Ham: 'Absolutely massive' Moyes challenge could impact London Stadium transfers

Winning the Europa League would be a “massive sign of ambition” from West Ham, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

David Moyes’ side travel to Lyon for their second leg quarter final tie and know that a victory in France will see them progress to the semi-finals.

With the Hammers’ chances of qualifying for the Champions League via the league all-but over following the defeat at Brentford on Sunday, it’s all down to the Europa League.

But the Londoners will need to produce another huge performance to reach the last four, with the French outfit unbeaten in this season’s competition, while they haven’t lost at home in Europe since 2018.

Tanguy Ndombele’s second half strike cancelled out Jarrod Bowen’s opener to leave the quarter final tie nicely poised ahead of the game at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais.

Should West Ham get the job done, it’ll take them through to their first European semi-final since 1976, which would only further highlight the incredible job that Moyes has done over the last few seasons.

And O’Rourke believes that should the Hammers go all the way in the competition and end their 42-year wait for a major trophy, it could prove a turning point for the club.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “It would be a massive sign of ambition from West Ham if they can go on and win the Europa League.

“They haven’t won a trophy in such a long time, and it would consolidate the great work that David Moyes has been doing at the club.

“I think it would be an absolutely massive thing if they can go on and win it. It would guarantee Champions League football next season and it will definitely help them in the transfer market this summer.”
