West Brom 'win the race' to complete another free transfer before pre-season

West Bromwich Albion have won the race to sign free agent Jed Wallace ahead of their pre-season training camp in Portugal, it’s understood. Wallace, 28, is formerly of Wolverhampton Wanderers and Portsmouth but he has spent the last number of years at Championship Millwall.

In that time, winger Wallace has contributed to 90 goals in more than 250 appearances for the club but, despite the fact that the Lions offered him fresh terms to extend his stay at the New Den, Wallace has decided to move on - and to The Hawthorns ahead of the forthcoming Championship campaign.

That’s a decision made in the face of plenty of competition; many sides in the second tier, including Burnley, Watford, QPR and Luton Town were all eager to take Wallace upon the expiry of his contract this year, but Albion and boss Steve Bruce appear to have won the race to land him.

The Portsmouth News report that Wallace is set for a medical today at the Baggies training ground, ahead of the club welcoming back their playing squad for the beginning of pre-season testing tomorrow. They fly out to Portugal on Sunday until early July.

Albion had added Jayson Molumby on a permanent basis at the end of the season, after a loan spell last term, while they also moved to bring in John Swift on a free transfer after he left Reading. All being well, Wallace is set to become the third official signing of the summer and the second new face.
