West Brom transfer state of play as Steve Bruce plans further additions

It appears to be quite slow on the transfer front at the moment for West Bromwich Albion, with concrete news pretty thin on the ground for now, but within the corridors of their Walsall training ground plans are being drawn up.

We are, of course, still only in the middle of June, and by completing the permanent deal - already pencilled in - for Jayson Molumby and the free signing of John Swift, the Baggies have actually conducted a fair bit more business than most of their Championship rivals up to this point; indeed at the time of writing, 17 of the remaining 23 clubs at this level are yet to open their account.

That isn’t to say that acting quickly and executing successful moves for identified transfer targets doesn’t have its benefits, but - particularly at this time of the summer - Albion are waiting on a few dominoes in front of them to fall. They’re very pleased with the capture of Swift, whose goal and assist numbers in the Championship read 39 and 40 respectively.

The wait for Jed Wallace goes on. Like Swift, he was a name which stood out when the list of newly made Championship free agents did the rounds at the end of last season. The former Wolves man is likely to leave Millwall, though he has an offer to stay put, and the Baggies are very much in the running. They’re likely to hear something on the Wallace front soon.

While they won’t have millions and millions to spend this summer, you can expect Albion to navigate their way through the free agent market and explore viable loan opportunities. Moving players out, though, will be just as important when it comes to balancing the books and creating sufficient room on the wage bill.

Albion do have a number of attacking options already at their disposal.
