West Brom player ratings v Luton as shambolic Albion are punished

West Brom’s shambolic form continued at Luton Town and the scale of the job on Steve Bruce’s hands was only magnified after Cameron Jerome and Allan Campbell inflicted Albion’s latest defeat.

Jerome’s header after half time and then Campbell’s measured strike in the closing stages settled the meeting, on the latest afternoon when Albion failed to score and were turned over on the road.

Quite how it was goalless at the break will forever remain a mystery. Don’t be mistaken, for large periods it was pretty drab and the quality (or lack of) on display reflected the pretty miserable conditions that the game was being played out in.

There was, at least, reason to be encouraged by aspects of Albion’s display.

The switch in formation by Bruce, in which Albion reverted to a back three, maintained a packed midfield and utilised top scorer Grant off target man Carroll, showed signs of bearing fruit after another lacklustre start.

Having spurned such openings, Luton allowed Albion to find their feet. They began to dominate the ball, but often they didn’t move it quickly or directly enough, particularly through the midfield.

The first genuine chance came from Luton’s own doing. Aston Villa loanee Jed Steer’s dreadful goal kick was picked off by Carroll and he immediately played Grant in. The forward bore down on goal, but his shot was underwhelming - though Steer almost made a mess even of that and was grateful when the ball, which slipped under his body, fell the wrong side of the post.
