West Brom decision on Romaine Sawyers future revealed

West Brom have reportedly decided not to activate their one-year option on Romaine Sawyers' contract.

The midfielder will now become a free agent after three years at Albion after signing from Brentford, appearing 64 times and playing a key part in the promotion to the Premier League under Slaven Bilic in 2020. Deemed surplus to requirements under Valerin Ismael, the 30-year-old spent this season on loan at Championship rivals Stoke CIty and he scored three goals and four assists in 29 games for Michael O'Neil's side.

The Baggies have now apparently opted not to take up the option to extend Sawyers' stay by a further 12 months, despite Steve Bruce hinting at the chance of a potential extension at The Hawthorns. Steve Madeley from The Athletic posted on Twitter: "Romaine Sawyer is a free agent after Albion decided not to activate their one-year option on his contract.

"Sad to see his homecoming end anticlimactically after such a promising start but not hugely surprising news."

Sam Johnstone and Andy Carroll are the other two players who will see their deals at Albion expire this summer. Johnstone decided to run down his contract at the club, resulting in Bruce to leave the England international out of his matchday squads in the final stages of the season.

Carroll joined the club from Reading in January, scoring three goals in 14 games, and was informed in April that a contract extension would not be forthcoming with Daryl Dike set to return for the start of the season.
