West Brom could sign 'Championship level James Maddison' at the Hawthorns

West Brom target John Swift is like a Championship level James Maddison, according to Midlands journalist Josh Holland.

The attacking midfielder has been one of the standout players in the second-tier in recent seasons and is set to leave Reading this summer when his contract expires.

It’s been quite some season for Swift, who’s bounced back from an injury-hit 2020-2021 campaign to produce some spectacular numbers for the Royals.

Swift hasn’t been involved since April due to an injury keeping him sidelined, but he still managed an impressive 11 goals and 13 assists in 38 second-tier appearances to help Reading beat off relegation prior to his lay-off.

But Swift is expected to leave the Royals once he becomes a free agent, and West Brom are one of many teams in the queue for his signature.

According to the Express & Star, the Baggies have sent scouts to watch Swift more than once this season, although the report states that it’s not yet clear whether Steve Bruce’s side will make a move for him when the summer transfer window opens.

Regardless, Holland has been left thrilled whenever he’s had the opportunity to watch Swift, who’s been involved in the joint-seventh most goals in the Championship this season.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “It’s quite impressive. Whenever I’ve seen him play this season, he reminds me of a Championship level James Maddison in terms of he comes deep, and it always goes through Maddison, which is the same as Swift at Reading.”
