Well Society urges collaboration, not 'investment at any cost' in Motherwell FC

Motherwell FC’s majority shareholder the Well Society say they welcome future investment in the club, but not ‘at any cost’.

Former Netflix chief Erik Barmack and his wife Courtney’s proposal, under Wild Sheep Sports, had offered to invest £1.95m over a six-year period, which was continent on the Well Society contributing £1.85m over the same period.

The Well Society are majority shareholders, with a 71 per cent stake, which would have dropped to 50.1 per cent, under the proposals, which the fans’ group opposed from the outset.

That proposal was withdrawn this morning, following discussions between the Barmacks and the club’s board.

Motherwell FC said in a statement: "Erik’s intention from the outset has been to play a part in moving the club forward. That can only be achieved with a unified fanbase.

“However, it has become increasingly clear that the discussions around his proposal are creating significant divisions within the fanbase.

“Such divisions cannot be in the best interests of the club.

“The club board have informed the Well Society board of Erik’s decision, and both parties are fully committed to working together for a positive future for Motherwell FC.”

A statement issued by the Well Society read: “Given our majority stance that the proposal should be rejected, we welcome the news that the process has reached an end.

“We look forward to now being able to turn our full attention to furthering our plan for growth, increasing our membership, advancing discussions with potential investors, and ensuring Motherwell Football Club continues to be safeguarded and successful for generations to come.
