Weghorst United move 'close', but not in time for derby

Wout Weghorst will not be available for Saturday's Manchester derby as United have not yet completed a deal for the Burnley forward.

United needed to have registered the Dutchman by 12pm on Friday in order to include him in the squad, but the transfer has been slowed as Weghorst needed to cancel his loan at Besikstas before moving to Old Trafford.

"I think we are close," Erik ten Hag said of a deal. "But he wouldn't be available for tomorrow."

Ten Hag also said Diogo Dalot will be unavailable through injury while Anthony Martial is a doubt.

The France forward trained on Friday morning but Ten Hag said he would face a late fitness test on Saturday.

"It's a small thing in his leg," he said. "He will be available for Wednesday I think."

Ten Hag also confirmed that Donny van de Beek's season is over due to the knee injury he suffered in the 3-0 win over Bournemouth on 3 January.

"On the long term it is looking really good, he will be back for the start of pre-season," Ten Hag said. "The rest of the season he is out.

"I think everyone's thoughts are with him. It is terrible when you are in a season and you get a bad tackle, a bad injury. It is always really disappointing and thoughts, feelings are with the player. You express that, our group did that really well, and we are now happy his knee in the long term is good.

"In the same moments, mixed feelings. Disappointment he is out of this season. The players are feeling we are building something good and we want to be part of it and everyone wants to be part of it."

United lost the last derby 6-3 in October, having trailed 4-0 at half-time at the Etihad, but since then they have lost only one of their last 18, and won eight in a row going into Saturday's match.
