Weather warning: Wet, wet, wet at Imola circuit as floods threaten Italian Grand Prix

The Formula 1 Imola Grand Prix could be at risk of cancellation as heavy floods have threatened the region over the last few weeks.

Personnel at the track were asked to vacate on Tuesday as weather warnings indicated more rain with ensuing floods.

Heavy rainstorms began falling over the Emilia-Romagna region since early May and has led to the loss of two lives.

The torrential rain affected several AlphaTauri team members, with the team releasing a statement, saying: "The city of Faenza and other parts of the Emilia-Romagna region has been hit by a violent rainstorm.

"It has produced heavy flooding, leading to the loss of two lives in the region. [The flood] has also affected some of our employees and, at this difficult time, our thoughts are with them and with everyone affected."

The storm has not subsided in the two weeks since, raising questions over whether or not the Grand Prix will go ahead this weekend.

Wet scenes

The rain had intensified over the last few days with weather forecasts predicting more rain for the weekend, although there is a little reprieve on Wednesday and Thursday.

Compounding the situation is that the circuit runs alongside the Santerno river, which has been overflowing in recent days and the excess water is spilling over onto the circuit and paddock area.

The intensity of the rainfall forced race organisers and Formula One Management (FOM) to clear the area on Tuesday as more than 100mm of rain came down.
