Weather updates LIVE as schools and roads CLOSED amid snow and flooding

Wintry weather is causing mayhem in Greater Manchester again - with schools and major roads closed. Heavy snow over the weekend has been followed by rain and freezing weather, causing disruption this morning (January 6).

Two Met Office weather warnings are in force across the region - for heavy rain, and snow and ice. Several flood alerts and warnings are also in force, while many schools are keeping their doors closed on what should be the first day back from the Christmas holidays.

It comes as some parts of Greater Manchester are still recovering from the New Year's floods. Manchester Airport closed its runways this morning following snow, before reopening them at 7.15am. Passengers are warned to expect delays.

Meanwhile, several roads are closed due to flooding, including Woodhead Pass and the A555. The M62 had been closed eastbound from junctions 21 to 24 earlier this morning, but has since reopened.

The region woke up to a blanket of snow on Sunday morning, leading to major disruption. Six flood warnings are in force around Greater Manchester and Warrington, plus 11 less severe flood alerts.

For today's rain warning, the Met Office said: "Heavy rain and thawing snow leading to some flooding in places. Bus and train services probably affected with journey times taking longer. Spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer."

A second yellow snow and ice warning, covering all of Greater Manchester and much of the north, read: "Further snow in places, along with icy stretches, leading to some disruption, especially to travel.
