'We understand' - Echo journalist reveals big Sunderland manager update

Joe Nicholson has been speaking on The Roar podcast about which manager other than Roy Keane could end up at Sunderland.

The Black Cats are still on the hunt for Lee Johnson’s successor, however, it appears that former manager Keane is a leading candidate for the job, with Sky Sports claiming that he’s being lined up for an interview.

Keane has been out of management since 2011 when he was sacked by Ipswich Town, but did enjoy relative success at the Stadium of Light, leaving the club with a 1.45 points-per-game record, but it’s not a foregone conclusion that he’ll end up in the dugout, with out-of-work Grant McCann also linked.

On Thursday’s edition of the podcast, Nicholson claimed that McCann’s name is more than just another link thrown out by the media.

“We understand that Grant McCann is also one of the leading candidates, obviously, he’s out of work after leaving Hull.”

If Keane was to make a return on Wearside then it would complete a magical series of events, with former striker Jermain Defoe completing his own return on Deadline Day having spent over four years away from the club.

The Republic of Ireland man helped bring happier times to the Stadium of Light in his previous spell by guiding them to promotion from the Championship, but having spent so long out of the hotseat, it could come with the huge risk of Keane not being able to handle a dressing room like he once did.

Whereas, McCann was doing a solid job at Hull City and has proved he can get out of League One having done it just last season.
