We tested 'Britain's best dashcam' - and it's a £200 4K masterpiece

Dash cams are something of a necessary evil in the world of modern motoring. Aside from filling social media with a wealth of hilarious or jaw-dropping clips of incidents on the road, they fulfill a very important role of ensuring you don't find yourself on a wrong side of an unfair outcome if you're involved in an accident.

They record the all-important evidence that could win your case in a motoring dispute, and some insurance companies even offer discounts if you have one installed.

Of course, there's a profusion of devices on the market, and you can pay as little as £30 for a basic recording device, but you could also, if you felt so inclined, spend a bit more. Or you could even spend a lot more and go for a dashcam hailed as the best one on the market.

Thanks to an accolade from consumer group Which? that title has effectively been handled to the Road Angel Halo Ultra. And I've spent a few weeks living with one to see what all the fuss is about.

Road Angel made a name for itself by offering some of the best speed camera detectors on the market, so turning its hand to making the best dash cam on the market was clearly a natural progression for the Nottinghamshire-based firm.

Out of the box, it feels very nicely made, with a small barrel-shaped body and a nice long power lead. It fits semi-permanently to your windscreen, so there's no annoying suction pad to muck about with if, like me, you never have any success with them.

It features 24-hour recording, a 4K image sensor, 5GHZ WiFi, 64GB of rolling storage, a companion app, and a driver-assistance system. And while these features can also be found on many other premium dashcams, there's a few other tricks up its sleeve.

Among these is a winter heating mode.
