'We need to be' - Bruno Fernandes explains what Manchester United must improve this season
Bruno Fernandes has warned Manchester United must be proactive instead of reactive in matches.
United were on course to win 1-0 against Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday night after an own-goal from Jack Butland but the Scottish club equalised in the 88th minute.
The sold-out away section erupted after Cyriel Dessers' goal and Rangers fans thought they had earned a draw, but United went up the other end of the pitch and scored a dramatic matchwinner a few minutes later when Fernandes finished brilliantly at the Stretford End.
United needed to respond after suffering a defeat to Brighton last weekend and Fernandes looked relieved to have scored a winner against Rangers when he spoke to TNT Sports.
"We know how much it means for our fans to win games. We really want to win games. We are a little bit frustrated at the moment because we start very well this year, with two good games against Liverpool and Arsenal, not playing brilliant football but we won the game with one man less," said Fernandes.
"Then against Southampton, we showed resilience, we didn't play brilliant football but at moments we controlled the game. Then we had the game against Brighton.
"Unfortunately, everything went wrong for us [against Brighton], but today was important to get the win because we want to go through in the Europa League. We want to get to the final in Bilbao, so we want to be in the top eight [automatic qualification spot for the knockout rounds].
"It's not about proving the character, we prove that in the 90 minutes and we can't only bring that out when we concede a goal or have something against us. We need to be consistent in the 90 minutes and unfortunately for us, we conceded a late goal and needed to score a later winner.
