'We had a miracle baby against all odds... months later my wife was gone'

The husband of a young mum who died just months after giving birth has revealed the heartbreaking moment he knew she was gone.

Martin Wood was given a huge surprise when he found out his wife Chloe was pregnant just after lockdown in July 2021. The 56-year-old was told he couldn’t have children after being diagnosed with male infertility in his 20s.

But the pregnancy was difficult from the start – with Chloe experiencing tonsillitis, severe cold sores, flu symptoms and extreme morning sickness.

The 25-year-old also suffered from epilepsy, and as her health deteriorated, so did her seizures. Once she reached 32 weeks, Martin noticed her seizures had become cause for alarm.

“They weren’t like her normal seizures,” he told the Manchester Evening News. “I didn’t feel comfortable. Normally I dealt with them and the aftermath, but I just knew inside that something was wrong.”

The couple, from Stockport, rang for an ambulance and Chloe was rushed to hospital. There, her seizures continued and she was placed into a coma to stabilise her.

For the baby’s safety, a decision was made to deliver her via emergency C-section. Addison was born on January 10, 2022 while her mum remained in a coma.

But more bad news was around the corner. Having suffered a collapsed lung, little Addison was transferred to a specialist hospital.

“I was going there every day,” former landlord Martin, who ran The Hope Inn and brewery in Stockport, added.

“She kept me going to be honest because I could focus on her rather than everything else that was going on.”
