'We continue' - Bruno Fernandes shows true colours with Cristiano Ronaldo comment after landmark

Bruno Fernandes is determined to help Manchester United icon Cristiano Ronaldo reach another special landmark in his career.

The former United star netted his 900th career goal during Portugal's Nations League win over Croatia last Thursday, reaching this milestone before Messi (867), ahead of turning 40 at the start of next year. Ronaldo added to his tally when he netted the winning goal against Scotland (2-1) on Sunday evening.

Fernandes, who turned 30 on the day, scored the equaliser, cancelling out Scott McTominay's opener at Estadio da Luz in Lisbon. After the game, the United captain highlighted Ronaldo's importance to the team.

"His influence is always the same, whether he starts or whether he comes off the bench," Fernandes told Portuguese media. "We know that Ronaldo has goals in him, and it’s no coincidence that he scored his 900th goal days ago. We will continue on until we reach the 1000th goal."

Fernandes also hit a special landmark, playing the 600th game of his career. "I had no idea, it was [goalkeeper] Rui Silva who told me this morning," he added. "It's a nice number, I hope to increase it.

"Not that playing a lot of games is the best thing in the world, for me it's because I love playing football and representing the national team has a special flavour."
