Wayne Rooney showed his class in the tunnel after Cristiano Ronaldo’s wink at 2006 World Cup

Wayne Rooney was brilliant on the latest edition of Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.

The Derby County manager replaced Gary Neville as Jamie Carragher’s partner-in-crime for Crystal Palace’s 3-0 win over Arsenal and he provided some wonderful insight throughout the show.

Rooney was pretty vocal on the topic of Manchester United as well and was even critical of Cristiano Ronaldo‘s re-signing.

“You’d have to say no at the minute,” Rooney said when asked if the transfer has worked out for the Red Devils.

“I think he’s scored goals, he’s scored important goals in the Champions League early on in the season, he scored the hat-trick against Tottenham, but I think if you’re looking to the future of the club, you have to go with younger, hungry players to do the best and lift Manchester United over these next two or three years.

“Obviously Cristiano is getting on a bit, he certainly isn’t the player he was when he was in his 20s, and that happens, that’s football. He’s a goal threat but the rest of the game they need more, they need young hungry players.”

A very interesting take. Unsurprisingly, Rooney’s bold comments have resulted in some fans on social media questioning whether he still holds a grudge against Ronaldo for the infamous wink at the 2006 World Cup.

But in our opinion, that’s highly unlikely. Rooney and Ronaldo were absolutely electric together at United in their seasons together following the incident, scoring and assisting goals for fun.
