Wayne Rooney delivers bleak Derby County update as takeover saga drags on

Derby County boss has admitted the club are in a ‘critical position’ as they wait for further developments on whether a takeover will be completed.

The Rams have been in administration since September and despite plenty of supposed interest in the club, a potential sale doesn’t seem to have progressed.

That has been particularly frustrating in recent weeks, as a deadline had been set for parties to make offers, with the hope that a preferred bidder would’ve been named earlier this month.

However, that hasn’t happened, and Rooney told The Athletic reporter Elias Burke that there could be a development next week, but he doesn’t seem too confident that will happen.

“What’s clear is that there’s no preferred bidder there. For the short term future, we’re in a critical position. It’s clear that this is going to go on into the next season. We’ve been informed that in the next four or five days things might happen. Hopefully that’s the case.

“I’m worried, staff are worried, fans are worried.”

Rooney’s men are currently five points from safety ahead of their weekend trip to Bournemouth.

The verdict

This is an extremely concerning update for Derby fans as Rooney is talking about this dragging on into next season, which nobody wants.

You have real sympathy for the boss as he is in the dark really as to what is exactly going on and every time there seems to be cause for optimism, something happens that drags Derby back, which is the case again.

Like the fans, Rooney will just be waiting and hoping that a preferred bidder is named in the next week because, as he says, Derby’s position is becoming increasingly concerning as every day passes.
