Wayde van Niekerk continues comeback with another impressive 400m win
South African athlete Wayde van Niekerk continued his recent resurgence by winning the men's 400m at the Gala dei Castelli in Bellinzona, Switzerland, on Monday night.
Van Niekerk, 30, did not qualify for the Commonwealth Games in July-August, but has showed a resurgence in recent weeks.
On Monday night, he won in a time of 44.38, a 100th of a second off his previous best time of the season.
According to the Team SA website, it was the 10th fastest time in the world in 2022. Van Niekerk held off 2012 Olympic Games gold medallist, Grenada's Kirani James, who clocked 44.38, while South Africa's Zakhiti Nene finished third in (45.75).
Last week, Van Niekerk also impressed when he clocked a season's best 44.39 in the pre-programme at the Diamond League-meeting in Zurich.
Van Niekerk holds the world record of 43.03 seconds which he set to win gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Meanwhile in the men's 100m on Monday, South Africa's Akani Simbine finished fifth in 10.21 seconds. America's Brandon Carnes clocked 10.04 to win.
