Waterford U-15 hurling match abandoned following brawl

An investigation is under way by gardaí after an under-15 hurling championship match was abandoned following a brawl involving players, mentors and supporters.

Waterford GAA and Bord na nÓg are now expected to carry out an investigation into the Division 1 championship match involving Ballygunner and Na Risigh in Mount Sion yesterday evening.

It is believed that the game was abandoned as a result of an altercation that involved mentors and spectators who entered the playing area of the pitch.

Footage of the incident has been widely circulated on social media showing the brawl that led to the abandoning of the game by the match referee.

Bord na nÓg Port Lairge will now await the referees report, which no doubt will outline details of the incident that forced him to abandon the game.

In a statement, Waterford GAA outlined that they are not currently in a position to address the matter.

"Waterford GAA and Bord na nÓg will not be in a position to comment on the game in question until the referee's report has been received and the process has been completed."

It is also believed that gardaí in Waterford are investigating an alleged assault at the game during the incident which broke out in the second half.

Gardaí have confirmed that they are actively investigating the complaint and what occurred during the incident.
