Waterford exit U20 championship as Clare ease to win

Waterford exited the U20 championship after slumping to a third successive loss at home to Clare in Dungarvan.

In a game originally set for Wednesday before being postponed for a day due to a water-logged pitch, Terence Fahy proved far superior, running out 14-point winners.

Goals from Keith Smyth and Senan Dunford in either half powered the Banner to an easy win as they overwhelmed the hosts after the break.

The result is Waterford's third successive loss, after four-point defeats to both Limerick and Cork in their opening two games. Clare, meanwhile, have their first win of the campaign after draws in their opening two matches.

Dunford bagged 1-03 from play, while Smyth racked up 1-09 overall, eight points coming courtesy of placed balls.

In an evenly matched first half, it was Dunford who fired the crucial score, finding the net to leave the away side 1-11 to 0-11 ahead at the break.

It was plain sailing after the break, the likes of Jack O'Neill and Sean Rynne plundering 0-04 and 0-03 respectively. before Smyth made sure of the result, rattling the net nine minutes from time.
