WATCH | Stellies boss holds back emotions after uncle Clive Barker hospitalised again

Stellenbosch head coach Steve Barker was visibly emotional when asked about his uncle and former Bafana Bafana mentor, Clive Barker, who was admitted to hospital last week.

The 78-year-old, who remains the only coach to guide the men's senior team to the Africa Cup of Nations title, has been diagnosed with Lewy body dementia (LBD).

He is currently in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with his condition stable, according to a statement released by the Barker family.

It has not been an easy season for Steve in the dugout for Stellies as the club and football fraternity also had to deal with the death of Oshwin Andries.

The 19-year-old, who played in midfield, but could also be trusted in defence, shockingly died after being stabbed near his home in Klapmuts, less than 18km from Stellenbosch.

Speaking ahead of the Cape winelands outfit 6-3 victory against TS Galaxy to advance to the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals, Barker reveals that the current situation he finds himself in has not been "easy".

"It has been a bit of a tough ride for us as a club over the last while, with a lot of sort of tragedies. It has not been easy. Fortunately on the football pitch it has gone a lot better for us," said Barker.
