Watch: Meet the Brazilian heroine saving the local coastal ecosystem

Mayris founded Nosso Mangue, an NGO dedicated to protecting and restoring the mangrove ecosystems. The organisation focuses on reforestation, conservation, and community exposure to support the diverse marine life. Local communities depend on this fragile ecosystem for food and natural resources.

Mayris, known locally as 'The Mangrove Girl,' was raised by a family of fishers, where she learnt early on about the crucial role mangroves play in sustaining fish, shrimp, crabs, mussels and other marine life.

Despite initial doubts from the local community, the mangrove restoration project has yielded significant ecological and social benefits. Mayris's unwavering commitment has transformed the once barren lagoon into a thriving ecosystem, boasting over 14,000 feet of mangroves.  This is a testament to the power of individual action in creating positive change.

Mayris tells SCENES that community involvement and raising awareness are key to the success of conservation efforts. Alongside her Nosso Mangue project, Mayris educates schoolchildren about the different mangrove species and encourages them to participate in local restoration activities.

Through her initiative, the young eco-warrior hopes that her town will be used as a model for mangrove conservation, turning sceptics into advocates and securing a sustainable future for generations to come.
