Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was shocked to hear that Manchester United fans want his team to beat Liverpool to the Premier League title.

Guardiola became City manager in the summer of 2016 and is one game away from winning his fourth Premier League title for the club.

City, who are a point ahead of Liverpool, play Aston Villa on the final day of the 2021-22 season and know that a win at the Etihad would secure the title.

The 51-year-old manager recently claimed that people in England would prefer to see Liverpool win the Premier League title instead of City. 

“Everyone in this country supports Liverpool, the media and everyone, of course because Liverpool has an incredible history behind in European competition – not in Premier Leagues because they’ve won one in 30 years – but it’s not a problem at all,” Guardiola told beIN Sports earlier this month.

But the majority of United fans are hoping that their local rivals pip Liverpool to the Premier League title.

A City triumph would be the lesser of two evils for United supporters as it would stop Liverpool from becoming the first English team to win the Quadruple.

United famously won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in 1998-99 but Liverpool can surpass that achievement if they win the league title and beat Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

Liverpool would also move level with United on 20 league titles if they finish above City this season.

After hearing that United fans want them to win, Guardiola revealed his surprise and also invited them to any potential title celebrations

“Yeah [they are] welcome if they want to join us in the street,” Guardiola said. “But they have to wear the blue shirt, yeah. They have to wear it!”
