WATCH | Hyundai Motorsport takes first WRC win in 16 months after dominating in Italy

Though the 2022 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) hasn't gone entirely to plan for Hyundai Motorsport, the team managed to secure their first win of the new season at the recent Rally Italia Sardegna. Ott Tänak and co-driver Martin Järveoja gave the team the elusive victory.

The Hyundai Motorsport team was on the pace throughout the weekend, winning nine stages in the process. For Tänak, he secured his 300th WRC stage win at the rally, with the overall win his first since last year's Arctic Rally Finland some 16 months ago.

"I am very happy to take this victory, especially for all the mechanics and people in the team who have put in an incredible effort to prepare for this new generation," Tänak said after the rally. "It's been a challenging time, but we have shown that hard work pays off. We have made some steps since Portugal; we've improved the car performance and our feeling with it."

The other crew of Dani Sordo and Cándido Carrera came home in third place.

The FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) moves to the African continent onto the rough and rugged terrain of the Safari Rally Kenya, which will take place from 23 to 26 June.
