Watch: Erik ten Hag gives James Garner advice in Man Utd training

Erik ten Hag has been quick to make his mark in Manchester United training and is already passing on his knowledge to young players like James Garner.

Garner spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest and played a key role in their promotion success, featuring in 44 of their Championship matches. 

The midfielder has been linked with a return to Forest or a loan move to another Premier League side but United are yet to make a decision on his future.

He reported back at Carrington for pre-season training earlier this week and has been filmed having a chat with his new manager, who appeared to be passing on some advice. 

The 21-year-old will now travel with the squad for their pre-season tour and will be hoping to play in friendlies against Liverpool, Melbourne Victory, Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Atletico Madrid.

“Well that’s the plan,” Garner told the Manchester Evening News when asked if he would have a chance to impress Ten Hag in pre-season.

“That’s what I’d like to do; go on pre-season and impress, it’s all up to me, really. It’s down to me as a player to impress him and hopefully make a mark.

“It’s huge [next season]. I feel like last season my career has only just started, I’m still young, just turned 21 couple of months ago. I’ve had such a good season this season, with the national team and at club level as well. As you said, it’s very important now to hopefully play in the Premier League next season.

“I think I’ve come on leaps and bounds this season. Played a lot of games, 50-plus now, so I’ve developed a lot physically, which was the question I was asked – whether I’d be able to play, whether I’m ready physically.
