Washington plane crash LIVE as 'multiple killed' in American Airlines flight crash with Army helicopter
An American Airlines flight has collided with an Army helicopter close to the US capital. Sixty passengers were on board the flight, which crashed into the Potomac River, along with four crew members.
Multiple fatalities have been caused by the mid-air collision, the Associated Press has been told. A search-and-rescue operation is currently ongoing.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the incident took place at around 9pm local time (2am UK time). The flight was a regional jet which had departed from Wichita, Kansas.
It collided with a military helicopter on a training flight while landing at Ronald Reagan National Airport, near Washington DC. The airport's runways have since been closed while a search for survivors takes place.
In a statement, President Donald Trump thanked first responders for their 'incredible work', noting that he was 'monitoring the situation and will provide more details as they arise'. “May God Bless their souls,” he added.
