Warren Gatland future Live: Favourites emerge as Wales hold press conference

It's shaping up to be a seismic week in Welsh rugby with Wales head coach Warren Gatland set to leave his role.

Gatland is contracted until the end of the 2027 Rugby World Cup but WalesOnline understands the Welsh Rugby Union has already decided to activate a break clause in his contract, which comes into play in the summer after leading Wales to a record 14 straight Test match defeats.

He has also overseen a nightmare start to this year's Six Nations, with his side being thrashed 43-0 by France on the opening weekend before another poor display saw them lose their must-win game against Italy on Saturday.

As the pressure mounts, a WRU board meeting will take place on Wednesday where the option of putting the New Zealander on gardening leave and appointing an interim head coach for the remainder of the Six Nations will be seriously discussed.

Two early candidates have emerged as a potential successor to Gatland, with interim Ireland head coach Simon Easterby and Glasgow Warriors boss Franco Smith both of interest to the WRU.

Wales will also hold a press conference, as normal, on Tuesday, with the head coach's future set to be the main talking point.
