Wakefield Trinity plot move for destructive Manly Sea Eagles powerhouse after Bill Tupou retirement

Jorge Taufua could be a Super League player in the coming weeks, with a move to Wakefield Trinity in the works. Rugby League Live understands the Manly Sea Eagles outside back is actively pursuing a move to Super League for the remainder of the season and has caught the eye of Trinity.

The 30-year-old, who can play wing or centre, is desperate to join a club in the UK in order to prove himself after a ruptured Achilles kept him off the field for over 12 months. Taufua, a thunderous ball carrier and big hitter defensively, suffered the injury in September 2020 and has struggled to re-establish himself in the Sea Eagles set-up since recovering.

However, he remains keen to continue his career and has set his sights on Super League. Rugby League Live understands he is willing to come and play on a tiny salary in order to facilitate a move and to secure an opportunity, with the hope of securing a longer-term deal for next year and beyond.

It's thought that could now materialise with Wakefield, who have freed a quota spot after Bill Tupou confirmed he would retire with immediate effect. The centre has hung up the boots after a failed comeback from a ruptured patella tendon injury.

Trinity are keen to bolster their squad for the closing stages of the season and with Taufua readily available, they are in prime position to secure a deal for the Tonga and Samoa international.

Taufau is a one-club man having spent his entire NRL career with Manly Sea Eagles. He has made 164 appearances for the club, scoring 88 tries. He has played once this season and scored in a defeat to Melbourne Storm.

Internationally he played for Tonga between 2013 and 2017
