Vinny Corey ratified as new Monaghan manager

Former Monaghan captain Vinny Corey has been announced as the new manager of the Farney County bringing to an end a long, drawn-out search for Séamus McEnaney's replacement.

A host of names, such as Jason Sherlock, Mark Counihan and Ger Brennan, have been linked to the position since 'Banty’ stepped down after their qualifier loss to Mayo in June, but it’s the Clontibret man who has been ratified.

Like recent Down appointment Conor Laverty, Corey continues to line out for his club and will play with, and face some, of those he will be managing now when the O’Neill’s play their county semi-final at the start of October.

Corey has been appointed on a three-year term and his backroom team will include his brother Martin, Dermot McArdle and Gabriel Bannigan.

"Monaghan GAA are delighted to announce Vinnie Corey as our new Senior Football Manager," a statement read.

"Vinnie with his backroom team of Martin Corey, Dermot McArdle and Gabriel Bannigan were ratified at tonight's county committee meeting in the Four Seasons Hotel, Monaghan for a three year term. The backroom team will be finalised in the coming weeks."

Corey announced his inter-county retirement at the end of the 2019 season having collected two Ulster medals under Malachy O’Rourke.

He earned his Farney debut under Colm Coyle in 2003 and really made his mark in McEnaney’s first spell in charge.

When McEnaney returned to the job in 2019, Corey was one of his coaches and acted as the on-pitch bainisteor when McEnaney was serving a suspension in the 2021 season.
